What a gas Certificate of Conformity inspection actually checks
Selling a house with a gas hob or geyser? Here is exactly what the inspector looks at, and the five things that fail most often.

A gas CoC is not a rubber stamp. The inspector is signing their own licence against your installation. Here is what they check, and where most installations fail.
The five common failures
- Bottles stored inside, or closer than 1 m to a door, window or drain
- A flexible hose longer than 2 m, or older than its stamped date
- No isolation valve at the appliance
- An enclosure that does not ventilate at the bottom
- A regulator with no visible rating
What happens if it fails
The inspector issues a list. Fix the list, re-inspect, get the certificate. Most fixes are under a thousand rand. The expensive one is having to rebuild a bottle enclosure, which is why we build them right the first time.
